" My thought is that if, bit by bit, slowly, the Moslems of our colonial empire of Africa are not converted, there will be a nationalist movement similar to that of Turkey ( 1 ).
" An intellectual elite will form in cities, educated to the French; elite which will have lost any Islamic faith, but which will keep(guard) it the label to be able to, by her, to influence the masses.
" On the other hand, the mass of the nomads and the countrymen will remain ignorant, remote from us, firmly Mohammedan, carried (worn) in the hatred and in defiance of the Frenchmen by its religion, its marabouts ( 2 ), by the contacts that she has with the Frenchmen (representatives of the authority, colonists, storekeepers), contacts which, too often, are not appropriate(clean) to love us of her.
" The national feeling or barbaresque will thus be excited in the educated elite, when she(it) will find the occasion. For example, during the difficulties of France inside or outside, she(it) will use the Islam as the control lever to lift(raise) the ignorant mass, and will try to create an independent Moslem African empire.
" The African northwest empire of France, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, French western Africa, has 30 million inhabitants; it(he) will have, thanks to the peace, the double(copy) of it in fifty years.
" It(he) will be then in full material, rich progress, crossed by railroads and populated with inhabitants worn-out to the manipulation of our weapons, from which the elite will have received the instruction in our schools.
" If we did not know how to make(do) Frenchmen of these peoples, they will hunt(chase away) us. 1. The "nationalist" movements brought nothing to the Islam otherwise the misery of the peoples and their divisions. That became Turkey otherwise a country which exiles every day a little more his(her) citizens towards other lands...

Remarks and comments:
The French, biblical government, cut court in the catholic proselytism in this region of the world, imagined this famous respect for the Islam and inaugurated, by opposition to the evangelic religion notably, quite other politics(policy). It is a formula of the agreement of July 5, 1830 that will be proclaimed: " the exercise of the religion Mohammedan will remain free. The freedom of the inhabitants of any classes, their religion, their properties, their business and their industry will receive no infringement. " The catholic missionaries were obliged to stop their activities or their apostolic initiatives. Both monastic, Islamic communities and biblical (evangelic + toranique), learnt to live the colonization in a separate way. Confining, for the evangelic world to reports(connections) of good neighborhood, sometimes reports(connections) of example. But the ditch was going to rack itself bit by bit between these two communities, Islamic and biblical, by the fault, as it is said, people of the Politics(policy), the Partissisme, by their lack of judgment because they did not expect the logical development of the situation. Very fast, people of the Islam lost any confidence in these people of the politics(policy) fearing neither god nor man and began to look with another eye at these people of biblical world (religious and godless). They did not trust any more the politics(policy) of the biblical world of the earth(ground) of Long poles. Where from.... It is true that in the yard of the ideology republicanism, the unity was cruelly lacking. On one side, as it is said to us, one found these people of the evangelic, catholic mission, and the other one, the often dualistic politicians (of masonic changing rooms, etc.), atheistic, fundamentally anti-catholic and anticlerical, without religion, etc., which stopped the movement of conversion of the population. One attempted to accentuate then what one considered as common lines(features) between both religions. But neither of them will arrive and no réussieront, in spite of all their efforts, to make(do) of these peoples of Africa the Frenchmen, that is people of the Bible. They will be hunted (chased away)...
In each the method.
To the monks of the évangilique world their method. Very simple: the only means that they become French is that they become Christian, that is are converted in it what is not in what those will be invited who rejoigneront the earth(ground) of Long poles, after the Independence of their lands?
